Takapau School is set in a rural community in Central Hawke’s Bay, approximately 20 kilometres south of Waipukurau. The Takapau area is supported by mixed farming, including dairy, sheep, beef and deer farming, alongside local industry such as Silver Fern Farms. The surrounding rural landscape contributes strongly to the character of the community.
Takapau School is a full primary school for learners in Years 1–8, with a roll of around 120 students. Approximately 60% of students live in or near the township, while others travel to school from the surrounding rural area.
We acknowledge Ngāti Kahungunu as the iwi of the wider Hawke’s Bay region, and the hapū associated with Rākautātahi Marae, including Ngāi Tahu (Ngāti Kahungunu), Ngāti Mārau and Ngāti Rangitotohu.
At Takapau School, our values of respect, relationships, responsibility and resilience guide how we learn, interact and work together as a school community. These values support positive behaviour, strong connections and a safe, inclusive environment for learning.
Our school has six classrooms that are welcoming and support learning. We also have a school hall and library that support a range of learning opportunities.
Takapau School is fortunate to have extensive outdoor facilities. These include a swimming pool, netball courts, junior and senior playgrounds, an enclosed sandpit, and a 350-metre limestone bike track around the school field. The school has a fleet of bikes so that all students can access the cycle track, as well as a turf area that supports sports such as netball, basketball and padder tennis.
Takapau is known as a community-minded township, with residents taking pride in their local facilities and organisations. Takapau School values the support of its parents, whānau and wider community and welcomes opportunities to work together in the life of the school.
